LIPI Familiarized Packaging Technology and Waste Treatment to People in Kepulauan Seribu

Kepulauan Seribu, Humas LIPI. LIPI introduced a scale-up technology to the society throughout a simple and understandable method. The activity is a major part of research and science dissemination LIPI has to carry. Additionally, the typical activity targets to trigger people’s economy (ekonomi kerakyatan) through the application of technology as an impactful research output. This had been the focus of LIPI during the activity of science and technology in Panggang Island, The Thousand Islands, DKI Jakarta. In this event, LIPI conveyed the idea of technology application for food packaging and waste treatment.

Particularly in food packaging technology, LIPI spotlighted technology and knowledge transfer to the people to increase the economic value of the food, such as local food sold for tourists. The local food, as it is termed, is native to Panggang Island and has been attractive for the visitors, for instance dried anchovies, fish crackers, seaweed sweets and oysters.

Nurul Taufiqu Rochman, the head of LIPI Innovation Center stated that in this event of science and technology dissemination, LIPI altogether with Komisi VII DPR RI had donated five units of food packaging machine to the Panggang Island people. “We hope that the machines and this kind of technology transfer to the bigger society are going to enhance the economic value of the local food. This means that the role of technology innovation can be directly applied in the middle-low micro industry (UMKM)”, said Rochman during the event on Saturday, Feb 24th 2018.

Furthermore, the dissemination also involved technical training for the islanders. Practical procedure of utilizing the machines was taught by LIPI researchers. Most of the training participants were women of the island who enthusiastically followed the whole process. The introduced platforms were semi-automatic food packaging machines to pack the local food.

Asep Nurhikmat, a researcher from the Research Unit for Natural Product Technology -Yogyakarta, (BPTBA LIPI Yogyakarta) delivered an enticing notion where the introduced packaging technology was oriented to the middle-low micro industry (UMKM) and home industry. The technology from BPTBA offers several advantages such as no food preservatives needed and the food shelf life might reach 2 years. Nurhikmat also added, “We are optimistic that by this technology, our traditional and local foods are going to be more competitive nationally and internationally”.
