- LIPI is a Non-Ministerial Government Institution (LPNK) under the coordination of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) which is directly responsible to the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
- LIPI 2020-2024 Mission:
The Indonesian Institute of Sciences carries out the Mission of the President and Vice President, with the following descriptions: To provide technical and administrative support as well as fast, accurate and responsive analysis to the President and Vice President in making policies for the administration of state government based on research and innovation. Improving the quality of human resources and emerging infrastructure and innovations. To provide effective and efficient services in the areas of supervision, general administration, information, and institutional relations. - The research and innovation fields at LIPI include:
Life Science Research; Earth Science Research; Social Science Research Humanities; Engineering Science Research; Science Research and Applied Technology; Development of Scientific Information and Documentation Systems; Research, Plant Conservation and Development of Botanical Gardens; Multimedia Development and Scientific Publishing; Coaching, Development, Education and Training of Researchers; Utilization and Innovation of Science and Technology. - Based on LIPI Regulation Number 24 of 2020 concerning LIPI Organization and Work Procedures, in carrying out his duties the LIPI Head is assisted by 7 (seven) Echelon 1 Units consisting of, the Main Secretariat as the person in charge of the Research Management Support Program and Other Technical Tasks and 5 (five) Deputy (Deputy for Biological Sciences, Deputy for Engineering Sciences, Deputy for Earth Sciences, Deputy for Social and Humanitarian Sciences and Deputy for Scientific Services) as implementers of the Research, Mastery, and Utilization of Science and Technology Program; Main Secretariat in charge of 4 (Bureau) namely Planning and Finance Bureau, Organization and HR Bureau, Cooperation Bureau, Law and Public Relations and General Bureau in charge of Management Support Program and Other Technical Tasks. Inspectorate as an element of supervision; and 3 (three) Service Centers consisting of the LIPI Scientific Documentation and Data Center, the Center for Utilization of Innovation and Science and Technology; Center for Development, Education and Training and Center for Media and Reproduction (LIPI PRESS)
- LIPI staffing (31 December 2020), the total number of LIPI human resources is 3,934 employees which are divided into 3 (three) categories, namely science and technology human resources (researchers, engineers, policy analysts, computer administrators, and engineering technicians), science and technology management human resources (planners, planners) , Archives, Public Relations Institutions, Personnel Analysts, Legislators, etc.) and Student Employees.
- Four Botanical Garden (KR), namely Bogor KR, Cibodas KR , Bali KR, and Purwodadi KR as a center for ex-situ conservation of flora.
- The 13 from 175 laboratories have been accredited by KAN and spread in 19 locations in 13 provinces.

- Two (2) international centers: the International Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Advances (ICIAR) and Asia Pacific Centers for Ecohydrology (APCE)
- Metrology Laboratory LIPI has been assessed by international peer reviewers regularly, and is accredited by the international standard ISO / IEC 17025 by the National Accreditation Committee (KAN) as the National Metrology Institute as well as the National Reference Laboratory of Metrology, especially for the unit of measure physical quantities.
- LIPI has received international recognition as much as 73 scope on the capabilities of calibration and measurement (calibration and measurement capabilities, CMC). This capability evolve a national reference in order to support the truth value for the manufacturing industry, the food industry, the drug industry, weather authority, health agencies , etc.
- ISSN registration service has been made online through the site "Online ISSN", for both printed and electronic periodically.
- Indonesian Scientific Journal Databases in the form of a database that contains a collection of scientific journals published by the College and the Institute for Research in Indonesia.
- LIPI has studied and researched competence in terrestrial ecosystems, inland waterways and the sea, both in terms of biodiversity, physical, chemical aspects and a system of interaction between organisms and their environment.
- LIPI has a strong competence in natural resources research, both mineral resources (metals and non-metals), fossil energy resources and geothermal, as well as the issue of disaster.
- LIPI has competence in the development of technology to provide solutions to the various needs of the nation.
- LIPI play a role in various regulations and government policies related to economic, political, social and cultural rights such as the preparation of the Employment Act, the Electoral Law, and also in the Recommendation for Handling Conflict in Papua, Aceh and Maluku.
